Unite For Sight Chapters
More than 4,000 volunteers in corporations and at medical, public health, undergraduate, and high schools have become leaders in developing sustainable solutions to worldwide eye health needs. Unite for Sight chapters are established by community members, college students, graduate students, medical students, and high school students. Unite For Sight offers a unique opportunity to bring an international nonprofit organization to your community or campus. As a Unite For Sight leader, you will empower your local community to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness.
Unite For Sight volunteers:
- Prevent blindness through free, noninvasive community visual acuity screenings
- Offer public education about eye disease
- Raise awareness about the importance of regular eye exams
- Educate the medically underserved about free health coverage programs and local free clinics
- Support those community members who are blind or have low vision
- Collect used eyeglasses and sunglasses to donate to communities in developing countries
- Fundraise for eye care programs in Africa and Asia

Chapters in North America and Europe
In North America, Unite For Sight's chapters provide free visual acuity screenings, educate children and adults about eye health and blindness prevention, and encourage the medically underserved to apply for free health coverage so that they can receive complete eye exams by eye doctors. Vision education programs are held in conjunction with vision screenings to enhance the value of vision screenings. In addition to screening and education events, chapters also organize eyeglass drives and fundraising events.
The major steps for organizing a new chapter include:
- Recruit volunteers through extensive publicity and appoint an eye care professional as an adviser
- Hold vision screening training sessions for volunteers and have all volunteers view Unite For Sight's Training Video. All volunteers must also complete the Unite For Sight Online Eye Health Course.
- Obtain at least 1 vision screening chart
- Collaborate with community centers (soup kitchens, clinics, homeless shelters, schools, preschools) so that you can hold vision screenings for the medically underserved.
- Place eyeglass donation bin in university library to collect prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses as well as non-prescription sunglasses. Unite For Sight's partner eye clinics in Africa and Asia prescribe the donated eyeglasses and sunglasses.
