Gabe Rosen, Youngest Volunteer To Make A Great Difference

Gabe Rosen, a 13-year old from Illinois, was awarded with a 2006 Volunteer Humanitarian Service Award at Unite For Sight's Conference on April 14th at Stanford University.  For his Bar Mitzvah project in September 2006, Gabe decided to raise funds for Unite For Sight.  To date, he has raised over $7,000 to support Unite For Sight's eye care programs with partner Tamale Teaching Hospital in Tamale, Ghana.

When he was ten years old, Gabe had an eye injury from a soccer accident.  Two days later, he had surgery to fix his detached retina.  When deciding his Social Action Project for his Bar Mitzvah two years later, Gabe decided to fundraise for Unite For Sight.  He said that he and his father looked up organizations that support eye care in developing countries and found Unite For Sight.

Gabe and his family - his mother Hallie, and his four grandparents - attended the award ceremony at the Unite For Sight Conference.  After receiving his award on stage, Gabe had an opportunity to meet Dr. Seth Wanye, the ophthalmologist at Tamale Teaching Hospital, who is grateful for Gabe's volunteer efforts.

Making a difference in the world is not so difficult if only one would care enough to sacrifice a part of oneself in order to change the world for the better. My experience as a Unite For Sight volunteer has inspired me to dedicate my future career to serving underprivileged communities around the world.
