Chilean Volunteer in Jodhpur

Ophthalmologist Dr. Miguel Pacheco Fuentes from Santiago, Chile, was a Unite For Sight volunteer eye surgeon at Tarabai Eye Hospital in Jodhpur, India.  During his visit, he participated with Jodhpur ophthalmologist Dr. Sanjiv Desai in seven eye camps.  Together, Dr. Desai and Dr. Pacheco provided 2346 eye exams and 211 cataract surgeries, which were sponsored by Unite For Sight.

Dr. Pacheco also presented three presentations at a glaucoma meeting of the Jodhpur Ophthalmic Society.

Dr. Desai says, "The greatest advantage of having volunteers at the hospital is that with extra hands, we can accomplish more. We are thankful to Dr. Pacheco for his services and to Unite For Sight for their partnership in our work."

I was amazed at the amount of preventable and/or treatable causes of eye disease that have gone unchecked here for many years. So many people, not just the elderly, but young children, were permanently blind from diseases that are easily treated in the U.S. Working with the Unite for Sight team on these outreaches in service to these wonderful people of Ghana was the single most rewarding work I've done in my life.
